If we feed our pets an unbalanced diet that is not adapted to their individual needs, it can significantly affect their quality of life in the long term. Therefore, an improper diet can contribute to the development of numerous health conditions, including diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, and other chronic disorders.

Nutrition as the Foundation of Lifelong Health

Many factors, including genetics, breed, living environment, physical activity level, preventive care, and nutrition, influence life expectancy of pets. While some of these factors cannot be controlled, nutrition is one of the most important aspects that owners can directly influence.

Pets need an adequate daily intake of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water for their bodies to work properly.

Each nutrient fulfills a specific role, such as:

  • Proteins contribute to the development and repair of tissues.

  • Fats provide energy and support healthy skin and fur.

  • Vitamins and minerals participate in numerous metabolic processes, including the functioning of the immune system and the nervous system.

When one or more nutrients are missing from your pet's diet or when they are consumed in excess, the body's balance can be affected. As a result, growth disorders, impaired immune function, obesity, liver and kidney disease, and other chronic health conditions may develop.

The effects of an unbalanced diet will be seen over time; they never occur immediately. As a result, inappropriate food choices, repeated over the years, can accelerate the aging process and affect both life expectancy and its quality. Therefore, adequate nutrition is one of the most effective investments in the long-term health of pets.

A complete and balanced diet, adapted to the species, age, size, and activity level, contributes to maintaining an optimal body weight, supports the normal functioning of organs, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases.

Key Nutrients That Promote Healthy Aging


As mentioned earlier, a balanced diet must provide all the necessary nutrients.

Each category of nutrients has a well-defined role, and their lack or excess can negatively influence the functioning of the body and the aging process.

High-quality protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle mass, repairing tissues, and supporting the immune system. In older or senior pets, proper protein intake helps slow the loss of muscle mass associated with aging and maintain mobility and physical strength.

Healthy fats, especially the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, are an important source of energy and contribute to healthy skin and fur. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties. They can also support joint health, the cardiovascular system, and cognitive function, especially in older or senior pets.

Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants participate in numerous metabolic processes and are essential for the normal functioning of the body. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C, vitamin E, and selenium, help battle oxidative stress caused by free radicals, a process associated with cellular aging and the development of chronic diseases.

Dietary fibers play an important role in maintaining a healthy digestive tract. They contribute to normal intestinal transit, support the development of a balanced intestinal flora, and can improve the absorption of certain nutrients. Fiber also provides a feeling of satiety, which can facilitate body weight control and reduce the risk of obesity.

No single nutrient acts alone. A long and healthy life depends on a balanced intake of all essential nutrients and a diet tailored to each pet's individual needs, including species, age, physiological status, activity level, and any underlying health conditions.

Feeding for Different Life Stages

The nutritional needs of pets change throughout their lives. They vary depending on:

  • Age

  • Growth rate

  • Activity level

  • Physiological condition

  • Health

A diet adapted to each stage of life contributes to the optimal development of puppies and kittens, maintaining health in adulthood, and supporting a healthy aging process.

  • Nutritional needs of puppies and kittens

The first months of life are one of the most nutritionally demanding periods. During this stage, puppies and kittens are growing rapidly and need higher amounts of energy, high-quality protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals than adult pets. These nutrients are essential for the normal development of the muscular, skeletal, nervous, and immune systems.

Protein provides the amino acids needed for tissue growth and repair, and calcium and phosphorus support normal skeletal development. However, both excess and deficiency of these nutrients can affect development, especially in large and giant breed dogs. Complete commercial puppy foods are formulated to meet these needs. 

Homemade diets need to be formulated by a veterinary nutritionist to avoid nutritional imbalances.

  • Maintaining health in adult pets

Once adulthood is reached, the main goals of nutrition are to maintain an optimal body weight and prevent disease. Adult dogs and cats need a diet that provides the necessary energy and nutrients without promoting excessive body fat accumulation. However, energy requirements differ from one pet to another and are influenced by certain factors such as:

  • Activity level

  • Size

  • Breed

  • Reproductive status (sterilized or not)

  • Lifestyle

For example, a working dog needs a significantly higher caloric intake than a sedentary dog who lives exclusively in an apartment. Also, sterilized pets usually have a lower energy requirement and are at a higher risk of obesity if caloric intake is not adjusted.

Regularly checking your pet's weight and body condition score (BCS) helps you notice changes early and adjust their diet if needed. BCS is a system used to assess whether a pet is too thin, has an optimal weight, or is overweight.

Fresh water should be available at all times, and treats should not exceed approximately 10% of daily caloric needs. Do not feed food scraps!

  • Supporting senior dogs and cats

As pets age, their nutritional needs change. Most senior dogs and cats become less active and need fewer calories to maintain a healthy body weight. However, they still need high-quality protein to help maintain muscle mass and slow the muscle loss that occurs with aging.

Senior diets often contain omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and highly digestible ingredients that can support joint health, cognitive function, and the immune system. Maintaining a healthy body weight reduces stress on the joints and helps prevent many chronic diseases.

For pets diagnosed with conditions such as chronic kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, or osteoarthritis, therapeutic diets specifically formulated for the condition may be necessary. These diets should only be fed as recommended by a veterinarian.

The Hidden Risks of Poor Nutrition

Poor nutrition can reduce both the life expectancy and quality of life of pets. Obesity is one of the most common consequences of overeating. It is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions. At the same time, nutrient deficiencies or excesses can affect growth, immunity, and normal organ function. Feeding table scraps, giving too many treats, and other feeding mistakes can lead to these imbalances.

A complete and balanced diet is one of the most important factors in supporting longevity and maintain optimal health.
